The Best of the Rest: I Brand & Family Wines

This is my last of three planned posts on my Spring Release 2021 I Brand wines, with this post focusing on the I Brand & Family label.  This label is for their “California inspired” wines, as compared to the country French and Spanish inspired wines of P’tit Paysan and La Marea, respectively. 

The 4 wines in today’s post are the I Brand & Family 2017 and 2018 Chardonnay, 2019 Pinot Noir (a first!), and a special 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, three of which I tasted in early March at their tasting room in Carmel Valley Village. 

One of the things Ian Brand is known for is creative grape sourcing for his vineyards.  In the case of these wines, he is using rather well-known (at least well-known to us locals) vineyards – ones known for producing quality fruit for higher-end wines. 

Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands: “Honore’ Escoole purchased his summer property, for his family in 1878.  He established one of the most desireable benches in Monterey County.  Now, managed under the local Caraccioli Family.  This site, continues to deliver a distinct expression of the northern Santa Lucia Highlands.  Dominate soil Chualar Sandy Loam, which allows great root distribution and development.”  (from I Brand’s tech sheet)

Enz Vineyard, Lime Kiln Valley, San Benito County: “Enz Vineyard is located in San Benito County in the little-known Lime Kiln Valley AVA. Enz currently owns about 1,400 acres and is planted with 40 acres of vines. Mourvedre and Zinfandel are the prime varietals however, they also yield small quantities of Pinot St George, Pinot Noir, and Orange Muscat. Although Enz is fairly close to Monterey Bay, the vineyard elevation site above the fog line and the steep valley walls create a warm microclimate ideal for Mourvedre.” California Wine Navigator

Massa Vineyard, Cachagua, Carmel Valley: “Overlooking the Cachagua region of Carmel Valley, (“Cachagua” is believed to be an Indian derivative of the French “cacher” and the Spanish “agua” – “hidden waters”), and framed by the dramatic surrounding hills, lie the beautiful vineyards of Massa Estate, formerly Heller Estate and Durney Vineyards.” Heller Estate

“The Massa Vineyard is the new name for the underground classic Durney Vineyard right here in Carmel Valley…We are pleased to be working with the Massa family on excellent organic farming practices…This release comes from its 1971 planting, which we consider far and away the most exceptional blocks on the vineyard.” I Brand Spring Release newswletter

2017 I Brand & Family Chardonnay, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, 13.2% ABV, $30 (#281*)

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: “Amazing balance and roundness.  Rich nuttiness, and fruit showcased upon the nose. Partial malolactic fermentation, allows bright acidity to shine, while the creamy characteristic follows upon the palate.  Layers of fruit and baking spices envelop the mouth, providing a silky finish that lasts.  Baked apples, and pineapple lead, with a slight clove finish.  Enjoy now, or cellar for an optimal tasting experience.”  10 months on lees, 50% new French oak.  4 months stainless steel, partial malolactic fermentation.

My Review: Beautiful golden yellow in the glass like sunshine.  Fresh citrus squirt on the nose and more of same on the palate.  A lovely wine. March 2021

2018 I Brand & Family Chardonnay, Escolle Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands, 13.4% ABV, $30 (#282*)

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: ““bright citrus, macadamia nut, subtle spice, silky smooth”  10 months in 50% new oak, last 4 months in stainess steel.” “Like a sunny day.”

My Review: Brighter yellow than the Albarino.  Mild, buttery and creamy nose.  Toasted marshmallow and butter on the palate with lemon curd on toast on the finish.  Delicious. March 2021

2019 I Brand & Family Pinot Noir, Enz Vineyard, Lime Kiln Valley, San Benito County, 13.2% ABV, $42 (#283*)

Winery Tasting Notes: “cherry, black tea, rhubarb, damp earth, dry acidity, will grow in expression over the next few years” “A cooler climate Pinot.”

My Review: Strawberry and raspberry on the nose. Raspberry and rhubarb on the palate.  Slight tannin on the finish.  March 2021

2018 I Brand & Family Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘Block 10’, Massa Vineyard, Carmel Valley AVA, 13% ABV, $75 (#284*) 

Winery Tasting Notes: “black current, violet, bergamot, strong & graceful, will age well over 10-12 years” “On par with the Monte Bello Road” (I Brand’s Cabernet Sauvignon from the Santa Cruz Mountains)

My Review: Deep ruby – bordering on inky. Intense dark berry (great Cachagua fruit) on the nose. Inkiness continues on the palate – rich deep flavors.  The challenge will be to lay it down and not touch it – we are not that disciplined!  March 2021

Le P’tit Paysan: New Releases Continue to Impress!

This is my second of three planned posts on my Spring Release 2021 I Brand wines, with this post focusing on the Le P’tit Paysan label. 

But, before we get to them, let’s start with a 2017 P’tit Paysan Viognier (as they say, “vee-oh-NYAY”) which I presented in a recent wine class.  Having lived near the Virginia wine region, where Viognier is plentiful, I have been impressed over the years with Le P’tit Paysan Viogniers.  In my wine class, we were each asked to present a Viognier from anywhere.  In our class we learned about wines from Argentina, France, California, Maryland, Virginia and Washington State! 

In addition to the 2017 Viognier, I am highlighting 3 Le P’tit Paysan wines from the I Brand Spring 2021 Club Release, which I sampled at their tasting room in Carmel Valley Village.

2017 Le P’tit Paysan Viognier “L’Apiculteur”, Cedar Lane Vineyard, Arroyo Seco AVA, Montery County, 13.4% ABV, $22 (#276*)

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: ““L’Apitculteur” translates, “keeper of the bees”.  Vibrant aromatics fill the nose with white floral qualities.  Honeyed stone-fruits fill the mouth, apricots, peaches and pears.  Cooler growing climate produces white floral components, and soft minerality.  Med-full bodied weight on the palate, supports a perception of sweetness, due to clean fruit and honeyed characteristics.”

My Review: Straw yellow in color.  Yummy boquet of sweet peach, grapefruit and gardenia.  Crisp on the palate, delicious, not sweet, with a slight citrus bitterness and perhaps some lavender on the palate.  Complex. March 2021

2020 Le P’tit Paysan Rosé Pierre’s Pirouette, Central Coast, 12.8% ABV, $19 (#277*) 75% Mourvèdre, 18% Grenache, 7% Cinsault

Le P’tit Paysan Pierre’s Pirouette is always one of my favorite rosés from the Central Coast!

From their webpage: “Our Rosé is a choice blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault. These vineyards are intentionally picked for their rocky & sandy soils which drive up the minerality and keep a balanced bright acidity. A perfect summer sipper with hints of strawberry, orange peel and a subtle spice. Undertone of crushed rock, sea spray and jasmine complete this complex but easy to drink wine. Pairs well with good friends and bonfires on the beach.”

Winery Tasting Notes: “ripe peach, rose petal, watermelon, lemon curd, fresh, bright & inviting”

My Review: Dusty rose in color.  Peachy watermelon on the nose.  Round flavors on the palate – Mourvèdre dominating.  A touch of sweetness and gentle tobacco on the lingering finish.  Agree with rose petal in the winery’s description! March 2021

2018 Le P’tit Paysan P’tit Pape Red Rhone Blend, Central Coast, 13.4% ABV, $22 (#278*)  52% Grenache, 36% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre

The 2018 P’tit Pape might be my favorite vintage of this blend yet!

Winery Tasting Notes: “dark cherry, cocoa, stewed plums, white pepper”

My Review: Beautiful ruby in the glass. Chocolate raspberry truffle on the nose.  A richer palate of dark cherry and black currant, with rose petal and cherry on the finish.  This could be my favorite P’tit Pape yet! I am hoping to showcase this wine in an upcoming Washington Wine & Cheese Seminar class.   March 2021

2018 Le P’tit Paysan Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon, San Benito County, 12.9% ABV, $25 (#279*)

The grapes for this Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon were sourced from nearby San Benito County.

Winery Tasting Notes: “currant, blueberry, cracked black pepper, medium-bodied”

My Review: Ruby in the glass.  A light, smooth bouquet and palate to match.  Very drinkable – not a big wine, but a great value and drinkable now! March 2021

Squeaking in a Rombi Tasting Just Before the Stay-at-Home Order!

On a lazy Saturday, I get a call from Sal Rombi asking if we’d like to come out for a tasting – like RIGHT THEN!  A quick text to our COVID Wine Squad and we were all in – lucky that our adult daughters could join us on this mission.  It was SO GOOD to see Sal, after what seemed like a very long time.  We thoroughly enjoyed our time together, as well as the outstanding wines. Yes, these are wines tasted in 2020 that slipped through the wine blog cracks – plus a recent tasting of his 2014 Merlot!

In today’s post I will review the 2014 and 2017 Rombi Merlots, and the 2014 Rombi Petite Sirah.  We also tasted 2 wines I’ve reviewed before – updated reviews from our recent tasting are here:

  • 2015 Rombi Cabernet Sauvignon (one of my favorites): Garnet in color. Deep plum sage and wood scent on the nose. Puckery rich intense blackberry & dried currant on the palate. December 2020
  • 2016 Rombi Merlot (Soberanes fire year): Garnet in color. Sweet ham hock on the nose. Rich underlying fruit, and a smokey finish. If it hadn’t been for the smoke taint, this would have been his best Merlot yet.  Hats off to vintners gutsy enough to still make these wines – appreciate them for what they are! December 2020

2014 Rombi Merlot, Carmel Valley AVA, Monterey County, 14.1% ABV, $65 (258*)**

This was his 8th year of production.  His fruit from this vineyard is so flavorful, creating wines with up-front intense flavors. Rombi’s wines are very big and complex – highly recommend decanting to get the full fruit flavors.  (I’ve said this before…)  Sal described this wine as “wonderful” – so wonderful he only has a few bottles left in his personal stash!  I still have at least one more – lucky me.

My Review: Garnet/purple in color. Rich bramble berry and cassis on the nose.  Huge palate of blueberry, blackberry and a touch of acidity, with at first a very dry finish. As it opened up, lush fruit enveloped the palate with a licorice finish. Very big, very complex, very nice wine. January 2021

2017 Rombi Merlot, Carmel Valley AVA, Monterey County, 14.1% ABV, $65 (259*)

My Review: Rombi’s 11th vintage of Merlot! Pretty, ruby color with some earth on the nose. This wine might have just been opened and not decanted.  Awfully young and a bit tannic with cherry flavors.  I will need to taste this one again! December 2020

2014 Rombi Petite Sirah, California, 14.6% ABV, $75 (260*)

My Review: Most of these grapes are sourced from Napa.  Deep purple-red in the glass. A very different nose with a touch of barnyard. Delicious, chalky, deep plum and cherry on the palate with a leathery finish. December 2020

Bargetto Scores a Silver Medal for its Dolcetto!!

In our early days in Monterey back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, we occasionally tried Bargetto wines down on Cannery Row.  Way back then, we were tasting Napa and Sonoma wines and were not impressed. But things have changed, both on the winery’s end and in my exploration of Central Coast Wines.  When my wine class chose a theme of Dolcetto wines, I decided to go local! 

Here are a few highlights from this good writeup of Dolcetto here: “Dolcetto is a dark-skinned wine grape from the Monferrato hills of northwestern Italy…Often viewed as Piedmont’s third red-wine grape, Dolcetto is something of a poor cousin to Nebbiolo and Barbera…A typical Dolcetto wine is intensely and brightly colored and offers dark, gently spicy aromas with earthy undertones of almonds – or walnuts in more tannic examples…”

About Bargetto: “The Bargetto winemaking heritage began with brothers Phillip and John Bargetto who from Castelnuovo Don Bosco, a small town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. They brought with them years of winegrowing experience when they established BARGETTO WINERY on the banks of Soquel Creek in California…The original Bargetto family winery was located in San Francisco from 1910-1917. The name of this winery was South Montebello Vineyard and Wine Company. With Prohibition on the horizon the winery was closed and the brothers moved to Soquel in 1917…The third generation of Bargettos now direct the operation of the winery. BARGETTO WINERY represents the oldest continuous-operation winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. 2017 Bargetto Dolcetto SCM Regan Vineyard Heritage, Santa Cruz Mountains, 13.5% AVA, $35 (#255*)  98% Dolcetto 2% Petite Sirah (290 cases produced)

Winemaker’s Notes from the Bargetto Web Site: “This 2017 Dolcetto has a beautifully deep ruby red color, and opens with aromas of black cherry, black pepper, and toasty oak.  It follows with notes of plum, black cherry, savory spice, and floral potpourri on the palate.  This wine is full bodied, with big rich tannins.  Although Dolcetto is historically known for being a low-acid wine meant to be drunk early, this Santa Cruz Mountains rendition has plenty of acid and structure to age beautifully.” 

My Review:  Dark ruby red in color.  At first, the nose was plastic, violet and perfume.  After open for 1.5 hours, the “plastic” subsided and was replaced with cherry notes.  By the next day, I’d add red currant to the bouquet.  Palate at first continued the nose, but as it opened, some blueberry, more cherry and black currant emerged, a bit astringent with a very dry finish.  By the next day, this was a heavier, tasty red.  January 2021

Pierce Ranch Scores Best Tempranillo and More!

Sometimes when I buy wine during the pandemic, I approach it with the same attitude as at the grocery store – if you see it and you think you might want it someday, you’d better buy it now. And that’s how I ended up with a sampling of enough Pierce Ranch varietals to last me a whole year!

I introduced you to Pierce Ranch Vineyards and several of its wines back in October, including the 2015 Petite Sirah: https://decantingmonterey.com/pierce-ranch-eclectic-varietals-from-the-san-antonio-ava/. I mentioned there that their wines received many awards in the 2020 Monterey International Wine Competition, including Gold Medal and Best Tempranillo for their 2017 Tempranillo and Silver for the 2017 Petite Sirah – those are the wines in today’s post!

And, as a brief refresher, Pierce Ranch Vineyards is a small, family-owned operation.  From Pierce Vineyards web page: “Pierce Ranch Vineyards is a small, family-owned operation centered in southern Monterey County’s San Antonio Valley appellation. We produce limited-run, estate-grown wines with an emphasis on Spanish and Portuguese varieties.”

2017 Pierce Ranch Tempranillo, San Antonio AVA, 13.1% ABV, $28 (#236*)

Awarded a Gold Medal and Best Tempranillo at the 2020 Monterey International Wine Competition!

About the 2017 Tempranillo: “…Located in the southernmost tip of Monterey County, the newly declared San Antonio Valley appellation is already showing itself to be an ideal region for producing nuanced, complex Petite Sirah. Consisting entirely of fruit sourced from our Y Ranch Vineyard’s rocky, hillside Block 1, this, our 2015 bottling, provides and elegant expression of the variety with excellent depth and solid tannic structure. Produced on a very limited scale, it was fermented in small lots and then aged, unracked, in French oak for 18 months. Aromas and flavors of blueberry, black currant, and black plum combined with a savory component and traces of spice.”

My Review: Cherry, blueberry on the rich palate, with currant and a mellow mocha on the finish. November 2020

2017 Pierce Ranch Petite Sirah, San Antonio AVA, 15.3% ABV, $28 (#237*) (gratis)

Awarded a Silver Medal at the 2020 Monterey International Wine Competition.

About the 2017 Petite Sirah: “Located in the southernmost tip of Monterey County, the newly declared San Antonio Valley appellation is already showing itself to be an ideal region for producing nuanced, complex Petite Sirah. Consisting entirely of fruit sourced from our Y Ranch Vineyard’s rocky, hillside Block 1, this 2017 estate bottling provides and elegant expression of the variety with excellent depth and solid tannic structure. A limited run, it was fermented using only native yeasts and aged in primarily neutral French oak for 18 months. Aromas and flavors of blueberry, black currant, and black plum combine with a savory component and traces of spice.” Awarded a Silver Medal at the 2020 Monterey International Wine Competition.

My Review: Dense ruby in color. Deep cherry blueberry and blackberry on the nose. After opening up, smooth, rich dark cherry and berries with a tasty finish. Super good. Petite Sirah continues to be my favorite Pierce Ranch varietal.  This wine was given to me by Pierce Ranch – I will always let you know when I have been comped a wine. December 2020

Holiday Shopping Leads to Discovery of Wrath New Releases!

Wrath San Saba Vineyard, 2019

Back in November, with the holidays rapidly approaching, I ventured out to Carmel Plaza.  Can’t go there without stopping at Wrath! As a huge fan of their San Saba Syrah, I was thrilled to learn the 2017 had just been released.  On a previous trip, I had done a side-by-side tasting of the 2016 San Saba and the 2016 Syrah KW Ranch.  With both the 2017 San Saba in hand and the 2016 KW Ranch in my cellar, time to drink some Wrath!

2016 Wrath Syrah KW Ranch, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, 14.7% ABV, $39 (#232*)

From Wrath about the 2016 Syrah KW Ranch:

“KW Ranch is located in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands, southeast of McIntyre Vineyard and just northwest of Gary’s Vineyard. Planted to both Pinot Noir and Syrah in 2000 by Kirk Williams, the site features a well-exposed, gently-rolling hillside with gravely loam soils. Wines from KW Ranch tend to be intense and highly aromatic.”

“…Our 2016 KW Ranch Syrah is wildly aromatic with flashes of black pepper, smoked meat, blackberries, leather and cassis.  The palate is thick, powerful and succulently juicy.  Even though the tannnis are bold, the wine is still nimble, elegant and approachable.” 100% Syrah. 100% French oak, 30% new. 158 cases produced.

My Review:  Deep ruby in color, white pepper, dark berry on the nose. Explosion of fruit blueberry, blackberry and cherry with a solid dose of pepper on the palate. A little licorice, medicinal, vegetal on the finish. Over time, a little tobacco on the finish. November 2020 

2017 Wrath Syrah San Saba Vineyard, Monterey AVA, 14.6% ABV, $39 (#233*)

From Wrath about the 2017 Syrah San Saba Vineyard:

“Our Estate San Saba Vineyard is set in a sheltered nook just below the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. The estate consists of 72 acres of which 67.75 are planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Falanghina. This is a cool site with little rainfall and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. Our soils, Arroyo Gravelly Loam and Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam, provide a low-vigor, well-draining, disease- and pest-free medium for our vines. They also impart a subtle mineral quality to our wines…”

“Powerful and elegant, aromatics include blackberry, leather and peppercorns; the palate is rich and concentrated with graphite, cassis, and a hint of smoke.”  10 months in French oak, 20% new.  313 cases produced.

Critical Acclaim:  91 Wine Spectator, 93 Vinous

My Review: Dark purple in the glass, blueberry and a touch of barnyard/sulphur on the nose, intense blueberry and blacked berry on the palate – jammy and good. Vanilla on the finish. I do slightly prefer the 2016 vintage to this 2017. November 2020

Bunter Spring: Goodbye, 2020, Promising 2019s, and a Terrific 2017 Cab Franc

I last brought you a Bunter Spring wine in October here: https://decantingmonterey.com/bunter-spring-there-is-no-excuse-for-bad-wine/. Check there for more about the winery and how we discovered it.

Mark provided his readers a very blunt assessment of 2020 here.  But he also added this: “Any good news we have is NOT from 2020.  There are some promising 2019s coming up.  The sauv blanc and orange wine from Santa Cruz are daring- we harvested earlier than ever before, to get high natural acidity for drinking with shellfish and shrimp.  The sauv blanc is a ringer for Sancerre. Our ’19 estate Syrah is perfectly balanced and intensely varietal, again leaning toward a European version of the grape. It will spend another year or so in barrel. Carmel Valley Palisades 2019 pinot noir will be bottled this spring. It reminds me of our 2013 Sonoma Coast pinot.   We made some excellent Monterey reds in 2018: a pinot noir from Carmel valley, another from Santa Lucia Highlands, and some zin, cab sauv, and cab franc from a “sleeper” vineyard hidden in the hills high above Arroyo Seco.  These follow distinctive 17 cab sauv and cab franc from a fifty year-old organic vineyard in Carmel Valley.  We have plenty of good wine for the short term.  We will need to make some whites in ’21 to go with our estate Syrah, and whatever other red grapes we buy.” 

Bunter Spring 2017 Spring Cabernet Franc, Carmel Valley AVA, 14.34% ABV, $30 (#225*)  86% Cabernet Franc, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48 cases produced

It tastes like California sunshine:  ripe black cherry and red raspberry, heady with alcohol.

Winemaker’s Notes : “This wine is from a historic organic vineyard in the hills high above the Carmel River.  The AVA gives a distinct and recognizable character to its fruit, something midway between Napa and Paso Robles – which is exactly where it is!…”  From the back label: “Aged 20 months in French and American oak barrels, 50% new.  This wine smells like something from the Mother Country:  lilac, violets, saddle soap, bay spice, cassis.  It tastes like California sunshine:  ripe black cherry and red raspberry, heady with alcohol.  Dense with fine tannins.  It has a long, warm aftertaste of sour cherry candy…Not Fined. Not Filtered.”

My Review:  Very inky, almost purple in color. Fresh blueberry and plum on the nose. Very rich intense dark berry and cassis on the palate, a little chalky. Opens into deep cherry and dark berry lingering flavors.  I prefer this vintage to the 2016.  October 2020

P’tit Paysan: Simple, Unpretentious “Country” Wines

I have presented Ian Brand’s wines to you in 4 previous posts (you can find them all with a simple search on “Ian Brand”) including one specifically on a P’tit Paysan wine here:  https://decantingmonterey.com/ptit-paysan-creates-a-2019-zabala-vineyard-sauvignon-blanc/.  We’ve tasted quite a few over the many months of the Pandemic and have consolidated 5 of them here! The P’tit Paysan wines are the ones that first made us fans of Ian’s wines – affordable, quality wines with amusing labels drawn by his nephew!

About P’tit Paysan from K&L Wine Merchants :  “Winemaker Ian Brand moved to California to pursue a life of surfing, but quickly got bitten by the wine bug. He is a bit of a rebel, and the purpose of the P’tit Paysan project is to present simple, unpretentious “country” wines. In reality these simple wines come from some unique vineyard sites that Ian has sniffed out in the backcountry of Monterey and the surrounding area. Most of these vineyards exhibit very poor soils, in harsh conditions just on the edge of farmlands. The struggle these vines must face makes for intense fruit.”  Because of he sources grapes from across the region, many of his wines carry the “Central Coast” label.  I have 5 of his Le P’tit Paysan wines to present to you today.

2018 Le P’tit Paysan Rosé Pierre’s Pirouette, Central Coast, 12.4% ABV, ~$20 (#25*)

It was a rare summery day, reaching over 70 degrees in our little coastal town where temperatures often hover in the 55-65 degrees range. We spent a good chunk of the afternoon enjoying the backyard, eating lunch on the patio, swimming and even sunbathing. It felt like we were at a resort and it called for a “pool wine.” But we got something MUCH better!

Winemaker’s Notes from wine.com: “Made from Grenache and Mourvédre grown in Spur Ranch’s limestone-rich clays and Grenache and Cinsault from the granitic bluffs above the Arroyo Seco River. Picked below 22 brix, with bright natural acidity. Fermented in several lots with some native and some cultured yeasts.” Because grapes are sourced from Monterey County’s Chalone and Arroyo Seco AVAs, this wine earns the “Central Coast” label. 61% Mourvèdre, 34% Grenache, 5% Cinsault

wine.com Review – 92 points: “It seems lately that Rosés aka Pink Wines are a dime a dozen. The omnipresence has my palate spinning. Fortunately, a few folks are producing some astonishingly beautiful efforts. The 2018 Le P’tit Paysan Rosé is one of the marketplace’s best efforts. TASTING NOTES: This is a pert little gem with a refreshingly delicious and crisp aftertaste. Its aromas and flavors of bright red fruit fly throughout the wine. Pair it with a chicken salad with slivers of strawberries and toasted sesame seeds.” Wilfred Wong March 2019

My Review: I presented an earlier vintage of this wine to the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar – and this one would be equally worthy – perhaps my favorite rosé of the vintage from the region. It has a fragrant bouquet of rose and gardenia. Keeping sugars in check, this wine is refreshing and balanced, pleasant and crisp – not sweet and not too dry. A bit of bitters on the finish. This is a keeper – highly recommend. April 2020

2019 Le P’tit Paysan Rosé Pierre’s Pirouette, Central Coast, 12.4% ABV, ~$20  (#33*)

No, no, the label was fine. This bottle spent time in an ice bucket!

We had a warm day – one of the warmest and sunniest this spring – short sleeves and sleeveless tops.  And a virtual happy hour with our favorite East Coast friends.  This called for another rosé! I told my good friend Randy that I needed his nose for my wine blog and he offered to virtually smell the wine – we held the glass of wine near our computer camera – he picked up strawberry and watermelon.  Yeah, no, but it was good for a laugh.  Yes, this is what it has come to.

Winemaker Notes from wine.com : “The Mourvedre from the Le P’tit Paysan Rose is from two vineyards, one in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains west of Gilroy (rocky, alluvial soils), the other is Spur Ranch in San Benito (limestone). The Grenache is from Arroyo Seco (granite), as is the Cinsault. Monterey/San Benito/Santa Clara Counties.” 56% Mourvèdre, 26% Grenache, 18% Cinsault

Wine Enthusiast – 91 points : “Fresh aromas of rose petal, watermelon, bubblegum and squeezed lime show on the nose of this pink blend of 56% Mourvèdre, 26% Grenache and 18% Cinsault. There’s a great sizzle to the sip, where a crushed seashell minerality wraps up flavors of light orange and delicate strawberry.” Matt Kettmann September 2020

My Review: This newly-released 2019 Le P’tit Paysan Rosé has a lovely pale peach, pink color.  It is higher in Cinsault than the previous vintage, with peach and pineapple on the nose.  It is crisp and light, with the Mourvèdre shining through.  Very enjoyable.  I might prefer the 2018, but would have to try them side by side to know for sure.  April 2020

2016 Le P’tit Paysan Cabernet Sauvignon Central Coast, 13.4% ABV, $25* (#14*)

According to www.sommselect.com, the P’tit Paysan 2016 is California Cabernet “at its most balanced, bursting with finesse and freshness, which instantly makes it eye candy for lovers of classic Bordeaux… You will not find another California Cabernet that delivers this much at such a low price, so don’t miss out…The grapes underwent a long, cool, whole-berry fermentation in separate lots before blending and aging for one year in neutral French barrels. The wine was bottled without filtration.” 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot

Wine Enthusiast – 91 points: “Warm aromas of baked red cherry and caramel grow more complex due to a gravelly minerality and hints of peppercorns on the nose of this bottling by Ian Brand. The palate leads with oregano and pepper, those spices overwhelming the fruit, and the rocky minerality continues, leading into a cocoa-laced finish. It is a lithe and lively style of Cab.”  Matt Kettmann June 2018

2016 Le P’tit Paysan Le P’tit Pape, Central Coast, 13.17% ABV, $22 (#37*)

Another beautiful day in isolation – and another Ian Brand Le P’tit Paysan wine.  We like these wines as every day drinking – such affordable, high quality, food wines.  We have been particularly fond of his Rhône blend “Le P’tit Pape” over the years.  As with the red blends from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine is based on Rhône varietals and, primarily, Grenache.  This was the wine which originally drew us to Ian Brand’s wines – our first favorite of his many wines. 

Wine Enthusiast – 93 points“Ian Brand’s flagship bottling just keeps getting better, yet stays reasonably priced. Light in the glass, this blend of 65% Grenache, 26% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre and 2% Counoise offers lovely aromas of strawberry, red plum, white pepper, wild tomato and forest floor. It’s taut in texture on the sip, holding cranberry and strawberry flavors in check, as dried sagebrush carries through the finish.” Matt Kettmann March 2019

My Review: The 2016 Le P’tit Pape appears table grape red in the glass, light-to-medium bodied with raspberry and cherry, very smooth and refreshing. May 2020

2017 P’tit Paysan P’tit Pape, Central Coast, 13.9% ABV, $20 (#216*) 

Winemaker Notes: “Cherry blossoms, dusty road, red plums, herb de Provence. Rosewater and red cherry on the palate, nimble with medium body. Grippy finish with firm Grenache tannins and hints of olive and sagebrush.”

Wine Enthusiast – 93 points: “Clean raspberry and strawberry aromas are lifted by a pinch of pepper and fresh marjoram on the nose of this blend of 57% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 6% Mourvèdre and 3% Counoise. Tart cranberry and strawberry flavors are quite fresh on the palate, but there are also savory hints of meat and white pepper.”  Matt Kettmann, 10/2020

My Review: Transluscent medium red with a berry nose. Cherry on the palate, followed by cassis, currant and tobacco on the finish. This wine is representative of how creative sourcing can lead to  a very nice, everyday wine at a great value.  We recently tasted this wine again – it was a enjoyable break from the super big reds we mostly drink. I appreciated it so much! September 2020

Idle Hour: Bringing Clarksburg and Oakhurst to Carmel Valley!

I’m going slightly off brand, but with a purpose.  With the boom of tasting rooms in Carmel Valley Village came a couple of what appeared to be interlopers – wineries not based in Carmel Valley or even Monterey County.  Yet, they are also part of our winery/tasting room fabric.  We are quite fond of them and are including them here.  Idle Hour is one of them.  This post is long, but includes all their wines we have tasted since March 2020.  For most, I don’t find professional reviews, so you are stuck with mine.

Idle Hour is Relocating its Carmel Valley location to Big Sur Vineyard’s tasting room at 1 Delfino Place!

We learned of Idle Hour Winery when they opened a tasting room in Carmel Valley. Idle Hour is Oakhurst’s (near Yosemite) first winery, making handcrafted wines (idlehourwinery.com). All of their wines are fermented using native yeasts, those which come from the vineyards with the fruit, also known as resident yeasts, making their wines “truly indicative of the vineyards they come from.” These are award-winning wines for affordable prices.

Owners Deb Payne & Anna Marie dos Remedios are always gracious hosts, whether at one of their tasting rooms in Oakhurst or Carmel Valley.  You will often find winemaker Anna Marie pouring wines and inviting you to come up to Yosemite to stay at their inn.  I love Idle Hour’s bottle labels – fine art by Tim Cantor (www.timcantor.com). 

The Madera Tribute reported that Idle Hour Winery in Oakhurst received best of class for its Blanc de Blanc, a double gold for its 2015 Tempranillo and silver for its 2016 Petit Verdot in the January 10 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

The Clarksburg AVA, best known for Bogle Vineyards & Winery, is the home to the Heringer Estates, a prime source of Idle Hour’s grapes.

Most of their wines come from the Clarksburg AVA, which spans three counties in California’s Sacramento Valley, including nearly 65,000 acres near the town of Clarksburg (more than Napa and Monterey County!). Think Bogle. The growing region has dense clay and loam soils. Fog and cool breezes from San Francisco Bay keep the Clarksburg area cooler than nearby Sacramento.

Idle Hour Blanc de Blanc, Lodi AVA, 11.2% ABV, $?? (#59*)

The Idle Hour Blanc de Blanc is a nonvintage méthode champenoise sparkling wine made of 100% Chardonnay from the Clement Hills Vineyard, Lodi.  This wine won Double Gold and was rated 93 points, as well as named Best Sparkling Wine at the North of the Gate Wine Competition, April 2019.  With only 44 cases produced, it has sold out. 

My Review: Crisp, clean and a bit peachy.  Refreshing.

2019 Idle Hour Sauvignon Blanc, Sierra Foothills, 13.8% ABV, $28 (#113*)

My Review: Appearing medium gold and slightly effervescent in the glass, we detected a slight stinkiness on the nose, like a touch of sulfur, which rapidly dissipated.  The bouquet was lightly floral and pineapple.  This was a nice wine, with a little sweetness, creamy in the mouth with pineapple flavors and bright acidity.  We enjoyed it – perfect for the occasion – and would buy it again! 

2016 Idle Hour Petit Verdot, Heringer Estate Vineyard, Clarksburg CA, 13.8% ABV, $30 (#3*)

My Review: Petit Verdot is a blending grape typically found in Bordeaux blends, but makes a nice red wine on its own. This is an enjoyable bold red, a bit tight, and we did not get the fruitiness expected from the varietal. I am not the biggest Petit Verdot fan, but my friends just love this wine. Maybe hold for a bit. March 2020

2017 Idle Hour Cabernet Franc, Heringer Estate Vineyard, Clarksburg CA, 13.6% ABV, $30 (#22*)

My Review: My daughter called this wine “spicy and good.”  In addition to spice, I picked up cherry and raspberry on the palate with a little oak and green pepper.  It is one of my favorites, but I would hold this wine a bit.

2017 Idle Hour Tannat, Heringer Estate Vineyard, Clarksburg AVA, 14.1% ABV, $40 (#126*)

My Review:  Garnet and inky in color.  Grass and SweeTart on the nose.  A little vegetal, yet intense flavors of SweeTart, tart cherry and plum on the palate.  Black currant, orange peel and licorice notes on the finish.   100% Tannat – sold out.  August 2020

2015 Idle Hour Tempranillo Winemaker’s Reserve, Heringer Estate Vineyard, Clarksburg CA, 14.6% ABV, $32 (174*)

My Review: Deep ruby in color.  Cherry and raspberry on the nose, upon opening, with dusty notes appearing over time.  At first it was bright cherry and cranberry on the palate, but opened up into deeper, lush flavors.  I highly recommend this wine. November 2020

2012 Idle Hour Syrah Owlbox, Love Ranch Vineyard, Madera County, 14.4% ABV, $28 (210*)

Winemaker’s Notes: “Ripe plums surprisingly alive after aging almost 6 years sur lie. Medicinal aromas in this menthol finish. This 94% Syrah co-fermented with 4% Viognier, in a Coté Rotie style, giving a bright acidity and smooth mouthfeel.” (from their website)

My Review: Garnet in color.  Old World smell.  Deep aromas, followed by an initial SweeTart flavor with a dry finish.  As the wine opened up, deep, dark cherry flavors emerged. I’m personally not a big fan of the Coté Rotie style. December 2020

2016 Idle Hour Petite Sirah, Heringer Estate, Clarksburg AVA, 14.5% ABV, $30 (189*)

Fresnolandia Review: “Idle Hour’s 2016 Petite Sirah is bittersweet; it begins on the tongue with a thick, sweet tart dark berry, transitions to a peppy berry, and ends with a tongue drying dark chocolate/licorice. To the nose, it is of a sweet, soy aroma; and if such a thing exists, also vibes of a dark berry vinegar.” Ronan Tetsu, 09/2020 https://www.fresnolandia.com/idle-hour-petite-sirah/

My Review: Dark purple in color, rich dark plum and blackberry. Smooth cherry some bitterness on the palate, dry and licorice finish. Super delicious. I want more of this wine. December 2020

2016 Idle Hour Vin Rouge, Heringer Estate, Clarksburg AVA, 14.2% ABV, $30 (211*) 40% Petit Verdot, 34% Tempranillo, 26% Petite Sirah

My Review: Dark in color, with a fresh and bright nose. A bit tart yet sweet on the palate like a juicy mix of wines. This is one of those blends that, upon opening, I am not sure what it wants to be. As it opens up, it melds together to a lovely red.

Tablas Creek: “Bringing the Rhône to Paso Robles”

A mystery wine was opened during our chilly December happy hour with our COVID wine tribe, warmed by the flames of their fire pit.  We guessed New World, but couldn’t hone in on the varietal (not one we normally taste).  It was revealed to be a Tannat, for which I have a fondness.  I mean, it is a palindrome, after all – perhaps the only wine that is one. 

We were first exposed to Tablas Creek wines at the MacArthur Beverages annual Red Barrel Tasting charity event in Washington, DC.  When we couldn’t get to California to go wine tasting, MacArthur’s brought the wineries to us.  Tablas Creek was one of the few Central Coast wines we could buy in its shop back then. 

About Tablas Creek from its website: “Tablas Creek is a pioneer of California’s Rhone movement.  Founded in 1989, it is the culmination of a friendship between two of the international wine community’s leading families dating back to 1967:  the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands.  After a four-year search, the partners chose Paso Robles, California, for its many similarities to the southern Rhone, and began the lengthy process of importing vine cuttings, building a grapevine nursery, and creating an estate vineyard from scratch.”  Their blends include the flagship Esprit de Tablas red and Esprit de Tablas Blanc (modeled on the Chateau de Beaucastel red and white), the Cotes de Tablas red and Cotes de Tablas Blanc (a Californian take on Rhône classics), and Patelin de Tablas red and Patelin de Tablas Blanc (a “neighborhood” wine made from 8-12 of Paso Robles’ top Rhône-style vineyards).

2017 Tablas Creek Tannat, Adelaida District, Paso Robles AVA, 14.5% ABV, $40 (#204*)

It was hard for us to guess the varietal of this “mystery wine!”

About the 2017 Tannat: “The Tablas Creek Vineyard 2017 Tannat is Tablas Creek’s sixteenth bottling of this traditional varietal from South-West France, known principally in the Pyrenees foothills appellation of Madiran, but originally native to the Basque region. Tannat typically has intense fruit, spice, and tannins that produce wines capable of long aging.”

My Review: Leathery on the nose, New World on the palate, juicy and strong.  We liked this wine. December 2020
